Data: 2009-10-23 | Author: Simon Barrett [See Author’s Biography]This is a book that should come with a warning, something along the lines of:
This is your captain speaking, please make sure your seats in the upright position, your tray tables locked, and the belt fastened securely.
Some authors, like bringing the reader gently into the story, setting the scene, perhaps a little background character, not so Lee Emory, his method is to throw the reader at 500 mph straight into the plot. For some people this may be a little traumatic, but it certainly is a gimmick. I have strong thoughts about his book, if you don t ™ € the reader on the first 50 pages, a significant portion going to stop reading it and find something else. This certainly is not the case with Freeze Night, from the opening sentence you are addicted:
He felt at home with blood all over his white coat and the smell stronger than in his nostrils.
Now that's what I call an opening! There is no pussy footing around, it just tells it like it is.
So what is Night Freeze all about? The thumbnail sketch is the search for a serial killer, but this is not a killer of a chance, their targets seem well planned and revolve around a coroner, Dr. Shyla Clifford. Your business card is unique, of frostbite arriving by various means of delivery.
Leading the effort of the police to find the killer is Detective Niall Malone, who just moved from Phoenix to Kansas City, and his work is being hampered by his outsider status. Is your research being ruined by those who work with him and for him? No leaks to the press that should never have happened, and leaks could only have originated within its own task force.
Who is this serial killer with a fondness for the carnage? As you increase the body count, so does the urgency to find the cold-blooded killer. The clues are few and far between, stamp a butcher's meat in the form of U.S. Navy logo is almost the only clue. But why would a serial killer be the subject of friends and family or Dr. Shyla Clifford, and she is a victim of the final destination?
Lee Emory is not the author rookie, she knows how to create tension within the pages, though curiously it is not strictly a single genre writer. I know she was interested in Sci Fi, and although I can not put my hands on information, I believe she has a new novel by Sci Fi in the making.
I certainly enjoyed Evening Freeze, yes, it's a little gruesome in parts, I'm not usually a big fan of gory descriptions, Lee Emory but scores high marks in my book, she doesnâ € ™ t dwell on bad things, but prefers to drive the story forward. It would be easy to get mired in the blood and gore, but the author takes the high road and focuses on history as a whole.
This is one of those books that deserves shelf space in the store, is well crafted and certainly a fascinating read.
